Wool Fibre, Ethically Sourced Insect Wings

About

Tracy McNally is an Australian emerging wool fibre artist. She is also a poet, mother, writer, performer and veterinary nurse.

She has always had some sort of creative pursuit on the go, from basket weaving to watercolours, embroidery and even insect taxidermy.

After discovering needle felting when she gifted her daughter a beginner felting kit, Tracy fell in love with the medium. She has rapidly gained the skills to give life to all manner of creatures that inhabit her imagination.

Tracy uses both needle felting and wet felting techniques. The felted creatures are displayed within snippets of their imagined biomes: assemblages of found objects from nature such as twigs, coral and stone, together with felted elements. The influence of vintage dome taxidermy can be seen in the composition and display techniques incorporated in the work. Tracy references the Victorian era’s naïve fascination with exotic creatures from far-off lands, when the connection between creature and habitat was not yet fully understood.
